Holiday magic for RSU 13 students

Dec 12, 2013
Second-grade students Kaylee Griffin, Michael McCue and Holly Davis display nutcracker decorations they made in their classrooms. Many children added string to their nutcrackers and will use them as ornaments to decorate this holiday season.

Second-grade students from Lura Libby and Cushing Community schools attended the Atlantic Ballet Company's performance of The Nutcracker Ballet at the Camden Opera House Dec. 5

The theatre experience was a first for many of the children and they happily dressed up for the important occasion. The children received copies of the "Nutcracker Ballet" book courtesy of Lura Libby and Cushing Community parent groups. Teachers read the story with students in class prior to the performance so they were able to experience the magical holiday story in its original written form. The students watched the performance with captivated interest, some literally on the edges of their seats.

Teresa Brewster helped organize the event and said, “It was a wonderful experience for all of us and something I'm sure the children will remember fondly for a long time. This has become an annual event for the second-graders. We hope to be able to continue this tradition in the future.”

Funding for the event was provided by a grant secured by RSU13 Adult & Community Education. In May 2014, RSU13 Adult & Community Education will support students from South School, Rockland District Middle School (grade 5) and Owls Head Central School to attend The Theatre at Monmouth’s adapted stage performance of Ruth Stiles Gannett’s children’s book, "My Father’s Dragon."
