Hoguet’s ‘Maine ABC’ for children
Camden — “Maine ABC,” written and illustrated by Susan Ramsay Hoguet of Camden, has been released by Down East Books. Illustrating distinct Maine icons such as moose, lobster and Mount Katahdin, the book’s rhyming verse will have children singing the words and learning the alphabet.
Hoguet’s first book, “I Unpacked My Grandmother’s Trunk,” won awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the New York Public Library and School Library Journal. Her next book, “Solomon Grundy,” won awards from the National Council of Teachers of English, the Library of Congress and the American Booksellers Association; and was a Horn Book Fanfare selection. She also collaborated on two books with Anne Spencer Lindbergh, one of which — “Tidy Lady” — won the International Children’s Choice Award.
In 1995, Hoguet started Animal Tile Works, which focused on decorative tile for children’s spaces. She has used some of the animals that originated in her tile work, notable the bear, lobster, newt and rabbit, for this Maine alphabet book. “Maine ABC” is available wherever books are sold or directly from Down East at (800) 685-7962 or downeast.com.
