WAITING STATION — The waiting station at Oakland Park in Rockport for the Rockland, Thomaston and Camden railway or trolley system that ran from 1892 to 1931. Not only did this system carry freight between the major commercial areas of these towns, but it also ran spur lines to the lime quarries. Passengers were also carried for 5 cents each. To generate interest in the passenger side of the business, the trolley company operated Oakland Park, an entertainment park with a casino, baseball diamond, croquet lawn, bandstand, picnic and swimming areas, boating facilities and a popular dance hall all situated on 72 acres on the shore north of Glen Cove in Rockport. Oakland Seashore Motel and Cabins continue to operate on the property today.

My parents spent time at Oakland Park while they worked at the Samoset in the the 1940's.  My wife and I chose to spend our honeymoon there in 1989.  We returned to cabin number one, for our 20th wedding anniversary.  Such special memories.

My Grandfather used to run the trolleys.

Great picture!   Trolleys, trains are in my blood.  My family lived above the railroad station when I was a child in Monson, where my dad was the agent for the Bangor and Aroostook...
