Herring Gut Learning Center Now Accepting Applications for First Work Experience Program
Having a hard time finding a summer job?
Are you a teen between the ages of 13-15?
Do you have a passion for being outside?
Apply to the First Work Experience Program at Herring Gut! This program is a summer work experience for local teens. Teens will learn to be responsible employees while earning money and participating in a safe summer activity at the Herring Gut campus in Port Clyde. Eligible teens must be between the ages of 13-15 and go to school in RSU #13 or live in the district.
Throughout the summer, teens will work in the gardens planting, weeding, and harvesting vegetables as well as maintaining our aquaponics greenhouse. Once a week, teens will manage a farmstand to sell the vegetables they grow. They will also provide public tours of our aquaponics greenhouse. Teens will be introduced to topics ranging from sustainable food sources, gardening techniques, responsible money management, and how to search for a job after this program is finished.
There will be four 4-week sessions (AM and PM shifts: June 24-July 18 and July 22-August 15). Students will work for two half days per week on Mondays and Thursdays. Students can apply for any session, but they must be able to attend all days. Students will be paid $200 (minus taxes) for their work. Applications are due April 5, 2013 and are available on our website www.herringgut.org or by contacting Alex Brasili at abrasili@herringgut.org.
