Born on Vinalhaven, Nov. 20, 1937, she was the daughter of Victor and Doris Fifield Shields. As a young girl, Helen moved with her family to North Haven where her father served as community physician. She was educated on the island.
On Sept. 3, 1955, Helen married Hubert Grant in Stonington. Together they moved to Sacramento, Calif., residing there until 1959.
Returning to North Haven, Helen spent most of her time raising her family while working for several island families during the summers.
In the fall of 1980 Helen moved to Rockland where she has since resided. For 22 years Helen worked in the deli at Puffin-Stop in Rockland. There she enjoyed the many friends she made while engaging in casual bantering with her regular customers.
Helen loved to keep busy and took pleasure in reading, walking and playing the slot machines, often taking trips to Foxwoods. She was a very social person and could often be found visiting with fellow residents, and providing transportation for many. Helen will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
