Rockland — City Councilor Eric Hebert announced Sept. 3 he will not seek reelection.

“There has been much speculation regarding the possibility of me running for a fourth term on City Council,” said Hebert in a press release. “I was personally torn about running for a fourth term,” Hebert said. “In the end, after considerable soul-searching, I have decided not to seek another term.”

Hebert said his decision was influenced by the demands of his medical practice and desire to spend more time with his family.

Hebert said he felt privileged and humbled to serve Rockland for three consecutive terms.

“Each time I ran for office," he said, "I only promised to do the best that I could.”

His work on the City Council was guided by the Rotary International motto “Service above self," he said, adding he never thought about how controversial issues might affect him personally.

“I have strived to understand the issue at hand, listen to all sides, digest the best information, and then make decisions that I felt were in the best interests of Rockland as a whole.”

Hebert ended his statement with thanks to his supporters and wishing good luck to the “capable candidates” that will run for his open seat.

The seat held by Elizabeth Dickerson will be open in November as well. Dickerson, who is also a state representative, has previously said she does not plan to run for reelection.

Former Mayor William Clayton and Valli Geiger, chairman of the Comprehensive Planning Committee, took out nomination papers in August to possibly be placed on the November ballot for City Council.

As of Sept. 4, Clayton and Geiger are the only potential candidates for the open seats. Nomination papers are available at City Hall and due Monday, Sept. 22.
