Halloween fun show at Hill n' Dale Stables
Warren — On Sunday, Oct. 27, starting bright and early at 9 a.m., the 4-H group The Gallop Gang is hosting a Halloween fun show at Hill n’ Dale Stables on Western Road in Warren.
The arena is decorated, and the jumps are set. The girls have worked hard this week, prepping their horses, their costumes and their riding skills in anticipation of Sunday’s show.
Classes include everything from a western barrel race and English jumping classes, but the emphasis is on fun and games. There’s a costume class, open to horses and riders, and spectators too; a potato/spoon race, and the hotly contested Sit-a-Buck class, where each rider puts $1 under their butt and has to ride a series of patterns. The trick is to keep the $1 under your butt at all times; if you lose your dollar you’re “out”. At the end of the race, the rider who still has their $1 is the winner.
The class that draws the most laughs every year is Bribe a Horse. This consists of a person trying to guide a horse around an obstacle course, over a jump and past tempting hay bales, using only a carrot. No lead rope, no halter, just a carrot. The classes are all good fun, but serve to teach the 4-H group important horse skills, and it’s also a chance for the girls to show off their riding skills.
In addition to the fun and games on horseback, there’s also a petting zoo, bunnies for sale and a visiting vet. Dr. Margo Maloney from Horse and Hound Veterinary Services will display some of her unique and interesting items and photographs of equine anatomy. Raffle prizes include a pair of children’s Adirondack chairs, generously donated by CedarWorks of Rockport.
Hot food and drink are available, there are ribbons and fun prizes for everyone, and all proceeds benefit the Gallop Gang 4-H group. For more information, visit The Gallop Gang 4-H Club on Facebook or call 542-1980.
