Updated: GWI closes Rockland office
Rockland — GWI sent a letter to customers announcing it was closing its Rockland office Friday, April 11.
The company plans to retain one of the four employees of the office, GWI spokesman Mark Robinson said April 16. One wireless technician will be working in the field rather than out of that office, he said.
Two other employees have been hired by Axiom Technologies and a fourth has received an interview for a new job in Brunswick, Robinson said.
"The two employees that have been hired by Axiom have been hired specifically to support Rockland customers under a contract with GWI, so there will be two technicians in the field supporting GWI's customer base," Robinson said.
Robinson said this is part of a routine consolidation to become more efficient.
The GWI office was located at 25 Oak Street in Rockland. The company sent notice of the office closure to about 1,700 customers.
"We remain very committed to providing high speed internet in the Midcoast," he said.
"While we regret that it may cause inconvenience for some customers who preferred to come by the office to make payments or get support, we feel strongly that the change will have a positive impact on support for all of our customers by putting our most experienced wireless technicians in the field where they can be more effective solving customer problems and completing installations," said Vice President of Operations Heather P. Kelley.
Biddeford-based GWI bought the Rockland's Midcoast Internet Solutions in June 2012.
Midcoast Internet Solutions was founded in April 1995 by CEO Jason Philbrook. It offered residential and business clients broadband Internet, digital phone, private links and web hosting.
"Jason Philbrook remains employed with GWI, and is an extremely valuable resource for the company," Robinson said. "He is working on strategic initiates with the company, and GWI looks forward to working with him well into the future."
