For the second year in a row, members from the Rockland Women’s Golf Association worked with Pen Bay Healthcare to hold the Midcoast Breast Cancer Classic golf tournament on Aug. 17 at the Rockland Golf Club.

More than $16,000 was raised to support breast cancer care and support through the Midcoast Breast Cancer Support Fund, through the generosity of businesses, sponsors and participants. The fund provides Midcoast residents with financial assistance for breast cancer items or services, including post-surgical garments and supplies, educational books and materials, mammograms, and help with living expenses for breast cancer patients experiencing financial strain. During the tournament, players in female, male and mixed foursomes competed for best flight, hole-in-one and longest drive. On the 10th tee, golfers had a chance to win a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox SUV from Fuller Chevrolet-GMC, which also provided prizes for hole-in-one scores on several other holes. Attendees vied for raffle prizes featuring locally donated goods and services during the luncheon, catered by Sandbagger’s Café.

The day’s winners included the women's team of Helen Plourd, Jean Sweetser, Marie Cates and Shirley Kile at 66; the men's team of Dwight Stanley, Andrew McCaffrey, Garrett Hilchey and Josh Miller at 60; and the mixed team of Mitch Perry, Della Weeks, Andrew Weeks and Dean Snell at 65.

Sheila Marriner (women) and Brian King (men) hit the longest drives, while Janice Morong won a chance to sink a 60-foot putt for the $5,000 prize offered by sponsor Fuller Chevrolet-GMC.

The tournament committee is already planning for next year’s tournament, which will take place at the Rockland Golf Club on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013.

Volunteers greet players at the second annual Midocast Breast Cancer Classic on Aug. 17.
