Goal aces: High-scoring Windjammers sting Hornets

Camden Hills has outscored opponents 36-7 in four games

Auburn — The Camden Hills ice hockey team met Leavitt of Turner on Wednesday, Dec. 18 as the Windjammers and Hornets squared off at the Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn.

The Windjammers did not take their foot off the proverbial throttle and scored at will, as they have throughout their first four regular-season games.

Camden Hills bested Leavitt 10-0 and picked up its third win in four tries. The Windjammers, which tied Waterville Dec. 14, are averaging nine goals per game.

Grayson Szumilas netted four goals for Camden Hills, while Jack Orne added two; and Perrin Ganter, Parker Lawson, Nicholas Bennett and Chase Matteo, each one.

Simon Lydon also had five assists in the win, while Orne added four; Szumilas, two; and James Annis, Jonah Cameron and Matt Prescott, each one.

Zach Hand made nine saves in goal for Camden Hills, while Ashton Dozois made 29 saves between the pipes for Leavitt.

The Windjammers held a 39-9 edge in shots, leading 15-3 in the first period, 11-3 in the second and 13-3 in the third.

The 'Jammers were 0-of-3 on the power play, while the Hornets were 0-of-2. Camden Hills also had a shorthanded goal in the third period.

Camden Hills was whistled for two minor penalties for four minutes, while Leavitt was whistled for three minor penalties and two misconduct penalties for 26 minutes.

“The team played well in all three zones tonight,” said Windjammer coach Karl Enroth. “We managed the puck better resulting in fewer turnovers, pucks and bodies to their net for offensive production, and held our opponent to nine shots for the game.”

Camden Hills has outscored opponents 36-7 through four games.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Western Class B, Camden Hills (3-0-1, 4.5974 points) is second, while Gorham (4-0, 8.6420 points) is first in the 10-team region. The top seven teams qualify for the playoffs.

The individual scoring from the Camden Hills and Leavitt game included:

First period

CH 1-0 at 9:36, goal — Szumilas (assists Lydon and Orne). Szumilas knocked in a rebound off a shot by Lydon.

CH 2-0 at 8:58, goal — Orne (assist Lydon). Orne skated across the mid slot and shot under the glove of Dozois.

CH 3-0 at 8:44, goal — Ganter (assists Annis, Cameron). Ganter drove to the net and knocked in a rebound off an Annis wrist shot.

Second period

CH 4-0 at 13:43, goal — Lawson (assists Orne and Lydon). Lawson ripped a slap shot from the left blue line point.

CH 5-0 at 3:05, goal — Bennett (assist Szumilas). Bennett took a wrist shot from the right blue line point.

CH 6-0 at 1:03, goal — Szumilas (assist Orne, Lydon). Szumilas shot from the mid slot on a 3-on-2 rush.

Third period

CH 7-0 at 10:05, goal — Orne (assists Szumilas, Lydon). Orne drove to the net and knocked in a rebound from Lydon's shot.

CH 8-0 at 8:25, shorthanded goal — Szumilas (assist Orne). Orne and Szumilas forced a turnover on the penalty kill and scored on the rush.

CH 9-0 at 3:17, goal — Szumilas. Szumilas forced a turnover and skated in on the goalie and scored on his right forehand.

CH 10-0 at 1:43, goal — Matteo (assist Prescott). Matteo backhanded a puck into the net from Prescott's shot from the blue line point.
