Gifford to be appointed Oceanside West interim principal
Rockland — The assistant principal of Oceanside High School East in Rockland is expected to be appointed the interim principal of Oceanside High School West and Thomaston Grammar School when the Regional School Unit 13 Board meets Thursday, Aug. 7.
William Gifford, who has served as the Oceanside East assistant principal since 2008, is being nominated for the head role at the West campus. He will replace Principal Larry Schooley, who announced his departure from the district in May.
Former Thomaston Grammar School and Owls Head Central School Principal Susan Stilwell had been tapped for the job, but later announced she was leaving the district to take over as principal at Appleton Village School.
Gifford has worked for the district since 1998, serving as both a director of the alternative education program and as a middle school social studies teacher. He has a bachelor of the arts degree is secondary social studies and is pursuing a master's in educational administration, according to information provided by RSU 13.
The board meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Rockland's McLain School.
Newly-hired superintendent John McDonald is also to attend the meeting. He began the job Aug. 1 and will work in conjunction with interim superintendent Leon Levesque until Tuesday, Aug. 12. Renee Thompson was hired as Oceanside High School East principal at the July 10 board meeting, replacing Tom Forti.
Jesse Bartke is being nominated to take over Gifford's job at Oceanside East on an interim basis. He has been employed as a special education teacher with the district since 1998.
The board is also expected to approve the appointment of Molly Bishop as athletic director, replacing Jim Leonard; Roy Grotton as transportation supervisor, Anna-Marlies Myers as a half time music teacher at Cushing Community School and Lura Libby School; Melissa Boggs for a one-year position as a fifth-grade teacher at Thomaston Grammar School; Dale Cameron DesMueles as a ninth-grade English teacher at Oceanside West; and Amanda Shortall as a Thomaston Grammar School fifth-grade teacher.
The board will also accept the resignation of Emily Davis, Oceanside West guidance counselor; Jess Yates, Individualized Education Plan coordinator; Holly Billings, literacy interventionist and Thomas Wilson, ninth-grade Oceanside West English teacher.
A revision to the St. George withdrawal agreement is also to be considered as well as approving the lunch prices for the 2014-2015 school year.
The first day of school for kindergarten to 10th-grade students is Tuesday, Sept. 2 and junior and seniors begin Sept. 3.
RSU 13 includes schools in Rockland, Thomaston, South Thomaston, Owls Head, St. George, and Cushing.
