Friendship student wins Lady Knox essay contest

Emma Simmons, fifth-grader from Friendship Village School, reads her winning American History essay at the Spring Conference of the Maine State Organization of the DAR in Waterville.

Friendship — Emma Simmons, fifth-grader from Friendship Village School, was honored at a recent Maine state conference of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, held in Waterville.

Simmons' essay about children during the American Revolutionary War had been chosen as Rockland area’s Lady Knox Chapter DAR winning essay and then was selected as first in the state for fifth grade. The student winners from Maine schools in grades five through eight read their American History essays to the gathering of DAR members, students’ families and friends. In addition Maine’s high school students read their Christopher Columbus and DAR Good Citizen essays.

The DAR President General, Lynn Young from Texas, was the guest speaker for the Spring Conference of the Maine State Organization of the DAR, which was chaired by Maine State Regent Sandra Swallow.
