Five or six years ago, in FL, a small hurricane named Charlie was supposed to stay 30-50 miles offshore as it moved north in the Gulf of Mexico along the coast. All of a sudden it veered east and slammed into Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda. So many storms have passed the area offshore and brought no more than a few squalls, that preparations for Charlie were a tad lackadaisical. The unforeseen devastation of Charlotte County was a rough way to learn that you ignore warnings at your own peril. It is not yet possible to accurately predict who will take the direct hit, and even outer bands of a hurricane can produce damaging winds or torrential rain. If someone like Mr. Huber wants to be the tough-guy hero who thinks he can ride out anything, he'd better not be calling the fire department when a downed power line has set his house on fire even in a pouring rain, or EMS if he gets sick or hurt, or the police if he changes his mind and wants to be rescued, or if someone is breaking into his house, because the roads may be impassable, and because emergency services will be busy making sure vital services (hospitals, shelters) are OK rather than rushing to help the nitwits who ignored the recommendations to prepare.
The folks down in New Jersey and NYC and coastal CT might not be so impressed with Mr. Hudson's dismissal of Sandy's impact.
We were very lucky on this one, and I for one thank GOD that we were!! Just look at the destruction not that far away from us.. Up around Portland for example.. And other states not that far away.. Here in Warren we really didn't lose power, my lights went off twice in a row and came right back on.. My grand daughter in Union lost power and wasn't restored till late this after noon.. Not bad at all compaired to some.. So YES we were lucky and that is a BIG FRIGGING DEAL to ME!!!!!
Just because it didn't effect you didn't mean it wasn't a historic storm. Had they not put out the word and nobody prepared and then disaster did hit, would you have turned around and criticized the media and emergency people for that?
