Four seasons of Maine landscapes
Rockport — The Barb Jackson Studio and Gallery will feature artist Martha Wakefield as Artist of the Month for August. There will be an open house/reception for the artist Thursday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the gallery, 22 Central St. between Shepherd's Pie and Salt Water Farm restaurants.
Plein air painter Wakefield’s upbringing in Auburn exposed her to an active outdoor lifestyle in all four seasons, sparking a lifelong love to the rugged beauty of the varied Maine landscapes. A successful career in New York City’s fashion industry allowed her to buy a tiny cabin in Maine to escape the frenetic city life. She moved to Massachusetts with her husband in the late 1990s to consult to the fashion world, which provided opportunities to return to her art before becoming fully committed to painting in 2007.
Wakefield has studied with Wolf Kahn, Jon Imber and Skip Lawrence and also cites the Bay Area figurative painters as important influences. She is a signature member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters and the Rhode Island Watercolor Society; and is a juried member of the Cambridge Art Association of Massachusetts, as well as a staff writer for The Palette Magazine.
Also showing work are Liz Donald, Barb Jackson and Carol Latta. Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call 631-0993.
