Forfeits plague Mariners in season's first matches
The Oceanside wrestling team has been busy early in its first year as a club team.
The Mariners participated in a tri-team meet with Lincoln Academy of Newcastle and host Medomak Valley Dec. 12 and also took part in a five-team meet Dec. 8 with Mount View of Thorndike, Nokomis of Newport, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield and host Mount Blue of Farmington Dec. 8.
Lack of wrestlers has plagued the Mariners in their first two meets, an issue that has caused Oceanside to forfeit many weight classes.
The Mariners lost 54-18 to Lincoln Academy and 42-30 to Medomak Valley Dec. 12, while in their first meet Dec. 8, the Mariners fell 54-12 to Mount View of Thorndike, dropped a 42-15 decision to Nokomis, lost 54-18 to Mount Blue and was upended by Maine Central Institute 40-18.
Despite being a small squad and losing many matches by forfeit, the Mariners' individual performances did not go unnoticed, particularly by Mount View coach Hamilton Richards.
"While Oceanside is young and not quite a full team, I was impressed with how well their kids wrestled for a first-year team," he said. "I expect they will improve over the course of the season."
