Five Town parents invited to alcohol, drug education program
Camden — Health educator Brenda Conlan will provide alcohol and other drug education for parents in the Five Town region Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Camden-Rockport Middle School.
Childcare is available by reservation. Please call Kristin Nelson at 236-7805 ext. 144 to reserve a space.
All research points to parental involvement as being the single most important factor in an adolescent’s relationship to alcohol. Drug-free kids cite parental disappointment as the number one reason for their choice not to use. As students navigate social life during high school, it is imperative teens and parents maintain dialogue regarding alcohol and other drug issues.
The following topics will be discussed at the parent workshop:
- Supporting the non-using child: creating an environment that invites a child to choose abstinence
- Boundaries: how to be an ally rather than a friend
- Effective strategies for parent/child communication
In addition to her work at schools in the United States, Conlan has given presentations at schools and conferences in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. Parents, faculty and students at hundreds of schools around the world have enjoyed her lively, honest presentation style and her colorful personality. Conlan combines the best in current prevention research with vast national and international teaching experience to assist young people in reaching their full potential. Conlan will also present to all CRMS eighth-graders during the school day.
