Figure skaters take smooth musical trip around countryYoungsters use music, stellar performances to wow crowd in season finale
Rockport — Figure skaters of all ages took a trip around the United States — using their blades and smooth ice at the Midcoast Recreation Center as their mode of transportation — and performed to classic songs as they thrilled spectators during the group's final show of the season Saturday afternoon, March 16.
The Skating Association of Maine held its spring skating show called “Road Trip USA."
There was even an appearance by the "California Raisin."
The soloists for Saturday's show included Hayley Downs, Willow Grinnell, Brooke Hammond, Juliana Haynes, Olivia Hupper, Lily McVetty and McKenzie Abendroth.
Downs has skated at MRC since it opened when she was age 9. She has participated in every ice show except the first one held at the facility. Downs is a senior at Camden Hills Regional High School and plans to study psychology and international relations in college.
McVetty, 14, is an eighth-grader at Oceanside West in Thomaston. She has skated since age 5. Hupper is a junior at Oceanside High School in Rockland. Haynes is a freshman at Camden Hills Regional High School. She has skated since age 6. Hammond, 17, is a junior at Hampden Academy. She has skated for 13 years. Grinnell is a freshman at Camden Hills Regional High School. She has skated since age 3.
Abendroth is an emergency room doctor and accomplished figure skater.
The show, which included the emcee work of Mark Ellis and the national anthem sung by Rachel Ellis, included the following skaters and performances from regions of the country:
