Field hockey play day sticks to it Aug. 25

By Staff | Aug 13, 2014

Belfast — One of the tell-tale signs that fall is around the corner has been, for more than three decades, the swinging in of the Coastal Field Hockey Play Day Championships.

Fall, as it seems, is around the corner.

Now in its 32nd year, the preseason high school field hockey play day event is slated to begin on Monday, Aug. 25 at 10 a.m. at Belfast Area High School.

Host Belfast, along with Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston, Mount View of Thorndike, Camden Hills and Brunswick are slated to participate.

Scoring for the tournament, which began in 1983, is unconventional.

Goals are five points, while shots on goal that would have been scored a goal, but were saved by the goalie (or another player), one point. The tournament champion is determined by who compiles the most amount of points through four games.

Games are 25 minutes running time.

The tournament has been dominated by Waldo County squads Belfast and Mount View for years. Since 1995, only Camden Hills (2008) has stopped either team from emerging as tournament champion. Belfast has won the event 23 times.

The play day schedule includes: Camden Hills versus Belfast, 10 a.m.; Oceanside versus Mount View, 10:30 a.m.; Brunswick versus Oceanside, 11 a.m.; Mount View versus Camden Hills, 11:30 a.m.; Oceanside versus Belfast, noon; Brunswick versus Mount View, 12:30 p.m.; Oceanside versus Camden Hills, 1 p.m.; Belfast versus Brunswick, 1:30 p.m.; Mount View versus Belfast, 2 p.m.; and Camden Hills versus Brunswick, 2:30 p.m.
