Faculty work at Maine Media Gallery
Rockport — As a companion to the Center for Maine Contemporary Art’s exhibition “Mentor: 40 Photographers/40 Years,” Maine Media Workshops + College is showing a collection of faculty work at its Maine Media Gallery on the ground floor of the Shepherd Building, 18 Central St. Sales of the donated prints benefit the Maine Media scholarship fund. The exhibition will travel to PhoPa Gallery in Portland this fall.
Maine Media's new Gallery Manager Sarah Whitling is in charge of exhibitions and operations at the Maine Media Gallery in Rockport, as well as PhoPa in Portland. Whitling recently completed a master’s degree in arts administration from the University of Oregon, and has a strong familiarity with Maine's vibrant arts community.
"I'm excited to become an active member of Maine's prolific photography community, and hope to expand the audience for Maine Media's galleries in Portland and Rockport through engaging and relevant exhibitions,” she said.
Whitling’s first exhibition is “Focus on Faculty,” on display in the Maine Media Gallery in Rockport through Sept. 30, and will be shown in the PhoPa Gallery Oct. 2 through Nov. 6. Inspired by Maine Media Workshops + College’s 40th anniversary, “Focus on Faculty” The Workshops throughout its 40-year history. Showcasing faculty work from 1979 to the present year, the exhibition displays a range of subject matter and photographic techniques — from color to black and white; and from digital to traditional processes. All of the work in this exhibition has been donated by the faculty, with 100 percent of all sale proceeds going to the student scholarship fund at MMW+C.
Maine Media Gallery also is displaying selected works from Paul Caponigro’s students. These black and white photographs are part of a generous gift from Paul Caponigro and represent work made by his students over the years. These prints are for sale at $200, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the scholarship fund.
Founded in 1973 in Rockport as Maine Photographic Workshops, Maine Media Workshops + College has evolved into a creative center for visual storytellers across many disciplines. Offering immersive photography, filmmaking and multimedia courses in one-day and one- and two-week workshops; a one-year professional certificate program; and a three-year MFA degree program, Maine Media attracts more than 1,600 students each year from all over the world.
