Fabian Oil plans construction of storage facility
Thomaston — Fabian Oil, Inc. is on the Thomaston planning board's agenda for Oct. 30, seeking approval of a site plan review before constructing a transportation storage facility at 68 Butler Road.
The plan is to construct two 20,000-gallon underground tanks and one above ground 30,000-gallon tank to store heating fuel.
Branch Manager Roger Mitchell said Fabian is in the process of obtaining Department of Environmental Protection approval. He said he assumes the department will review the plan and forgo inspecting the site as the quantity of fuel storage is not large. "We're not anticipating any problems," he said.
The company previously rented a fuel storage facility on Merrill Drive in Rockland, but moved from the space because it wasn't large enough.
The Butler Road property is currently owned by Steel Pro Land LLC, but Mitchell said Fabian will be purchasing the property. The zone is industrial.
Contingent on DEP approval and a site plan review and permit approval by the planning board, construction will begin Dec.1, Mitchell said.
The Thomaston Zoning Board of Appeals approved the storage facility plan Oct. 16.
Fabian Oil is based in Oakland, and started a branch in Thomaston after purchasing Montgomery Oil in 2009.
Maritime Energy is in the process of an environmental inspection of the Merrill Drive location formerly leased by Fabian Oil and is planning on purchasing the property contingent on the inspection results, said Charlie Page, assistant vice president of Maritime Energy.
Page said the business has acquired the necessary city permits to use the bulk storage space.
Page said Maritime Energy is expanding its business and additional fuel store space is needed. Maritime operates two offices, one on on Park Street and another in Montville. The company is hiring more employees.
Founded in 1939, Maritime Energy is a family-owned and operated business employing 200 people.
