Camden — A fire that started in the engine compartment of a Dodge Caravan destroyed the vehicle May 15.

Camden Fire Chief Chris Farley said a passer-by used a tow strap to pull the van away from a nearby structure to keep the fire from spreading. The vehicle was still in flames when the fire department arrived at 59 High St., he said.

Fire apparatus and a police cruiser blocked the north-bound lane of Route 1 and traffic was slowed for a time as crews worked to douse the fire.
