Endangered medicinal plants, United Plant Savers talk

Jul 08, 2014

Rockport — Join Denise DeSpirito for an informative slide show, talk and garden walk in which she will share her personal experience as an intern at United Plant Savers Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary in Rutland, Ohio.

The talk, part of Avena's Living Earth, Living Soul Series, will be held Wednesday, July 23, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Avena Botanicals, 219 Mill St. Suggested donation is $10.

A short, guided garden walk through the Woodland Garden will accompany the talk to introduce people to some of the endangered native medicinals at Avena. She will offer thoughts about how to create a botanical sanctuary for these at risk plants.

DeSpirito is the current garden manager at Avena Botanicals. As a former United Plant Savers intern she holds a special place in her heart for at risk and endangered woodland plants. She has also grown herbs and flowers at Farmacy Herbs in Rhode Island and Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in New York and studied herbalism with a variety of inspiring teachers including the plants themselves.

The work of United Plant Savers involves research, education and conservation of native medicinal plants and their habitats in the United States and Canada while ensuring an abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for generations to come.
