Elinor Emery Lanz

Allentown, Pa. — Elinor M. “Pete” (Emery) Lanz, 96, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at Luther Crest in Allentown, Pa. Born in Norristown, Pa., on Aug. 26, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Abram Clarence “Pete” Emery and Marion Adele (Famous) Emery.

Pete met her future husband, Ralph L. Lanz Jr., when they were students at Drexel University. They married on June 26, 1937, and would have celebrated their 52nd anniversary in June when Ralph died on May 11, 1989. Pete graduated from Drexel with a bachelor of science in home economics and was a dietician at Lankanau Hospital. Later, when their three girls were in school, Pete went back to Drexel for her master’s in home economics. She taught millinery at Spring Garden Institute, Philadelphia, for several years and later taught home economics at Worcester (Pa.) Junior High School.

Pete and Ralph retired to Rockport in 1975. Pete returned to Pennsylvania in 2002. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Coopersburg, Pa., and a former member of Nativity Lutheran Church, Rockport. Throughout her life, Pete was active in local, synodical, and national Lutheran Church women organizations, her Lutheran congregations where she lived, book clubs, and many volunteer groups. She loved reading and learning, and often attended lectures and presentations in the community. Pete was a delightful and outgoing woman with a fiercely independent spirit. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Pete is survived by their three daughters, Carol Lanz Weiser and her husband, Dennis Oberholtzer, Macungie, Pa., Janet Lanz, Upper Black Eddy, Pa., and Marti Lanz Carroll and her husband, Tom, Washington Crossing, Pa.; three grandchildren, Christine Weiser and her husband, Robert Giglio, Mark Lanz Weiser and Joshua K. Carroll and his wife, Cathy; and three great-grandchildren, Dexter Giglio, Mia Carroll and Keegan Carroll. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Kathryn Lanz; niece, Christine Emery; and nephew, Richard Emery.

In addition to her husband and parents, Pete was predeceased by a brother, Edgar R. Emery; a nephew, Stephen Emery; and a grandson, Peter Conrad Weiser.

A memorial service will be held at Luther Crest in Crest Hall, 800 Hausman Road, Allentown, on Saturday, June 9 at 2 p.m. Visitation from 12:30 p.m. until the service begins. Arrangements by Stephens Funeral Home Inc. Please share online condolences at www.stephensfuneral.com.
