Lincolnville —

The eighth annual Dip 4 Derek, a fundraising event for the Derek O'Brien Trust, will take place Tuesday, Jan. 1, at noon at Lincolnville Beach.

O'Brien suffered a broken spine in a 2005 swimming accident.

During the seventh annual Dip 4 Derek on Jan. 1, 2012, more than 70 participants braved the chilly waters of the Atlantic Ocean — hovering at around 45 degrees Fahrenheit — to raise more than $3,000 for the Derek O'Brien Trust, according to previously published reports.

Certificates will be available for those who raise money and participate in the challenge. Donations are greatly appreciated and can be handed in on the day of the event, checks should be made payable to the Derek O'Brien Trust.
