Eighth annual Dip 4 Derek takes to the ocean
Lincolnville — It may have been a chilly 30 degrees Jan. 1, but participants in the eighth annual Dip 4 Derek fundraiser charged into the Atlantic Ocean as if it was the height of summer.
According to event coordinator Peter Roper, approximately 35 participants ranging in age from 6 to 81 made the frigid plunge in order to raise money for the Derek O'Brien Trust.
O'Brien, a Rockport native, suffered a broken spine in a 2005 swimming accident. An avid photographer and new media student, O'Brien currently attends the University of Maine at Orono.
Roper said roughly $1,400 had been raised by Jan. 2, but those wishing to make additional donations may send checks payable to the Derek O'Brien Trust to 10 Spring St., Camden, ME 04843.
