Eight is great: Mariner freshmen nab winning season
Rockland — The Oceanside High School girls freshmen basketball team put together a 2013-14 season to be proud of, with several new players and a new coach collaborating for a fine year on the hardwood.
Led by coach Ashley Geel, the Mariners netted an 8-3 record and proved to be competitive against other Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference subvarsity squads.
Mariner team members included Sierra Beal, Olivia Staples, Lauren Hatch, Haley Montgomery, Cassi Butler, Bri White-Ortiz, Alexis Mazurek, Julia Barbour, Breanna Knowlton and Elise Laslavic.
"As my first year coaching I must say that I could not have asked for a better group of young ladies to work with,” said Geel, a former three-sport standout for Georges Valley High School. “At the start of the season I honestly had no idea what to expect from these girls, as I did not know any of them and therefore had not a clue what their capabilities were.”
Geel said her team “improved immensely throughout the season on many aspects of their game.”
“We focused a lot on playing together as a team on both the offensive and defensive ends,” she said. “At the start of the season this was a struggle but as it continued the girls went beyond my expectations.”
The Mariners also outscored opponents 396-315 on the year, averaging 36 points per contest.
