Eclectic weekend at Rock City
Rockland — On Friday, Jan. 4 from 5 to 7 p.m., Rock City Cafe's Velvet Lounge will welcome Zach Zaitlin, who performs dynamic, heartfelt piano- and synth-based pop with soulful, haunting vocals and a dark, warm classical and experimental undercurrent.
On Saturday, Jan. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m., the Velvet Lounge will host RatTail, a Toronto-based pop trio featuring singer/guitarist Jasmyn Burke and her oddball counterparts Timy Fag (bass) and Jesse Frank Matthews (drums). Starting as a folksy solo project, the full band formed in 2009, recording tunes in Matthews’ basement and releasing the “George Mounsey” EP on Unfamiliar Records in the summer of 2010. Quickly topping best of critics lists and gaining recognition for their entertaining live shows, the band suddenly went through a line-up change, but quickly bounced back ready to work on new songs with a new bandmate.
With a year of national touring and intermittent releases of bizarre J FM-created music videos, RatTail has garnered interest in their strange visuals, Burke’s jangly distinct vocals and the bands gritty yet playful sound. RatTail is set to release its debut LP in January.
As usual, there is no cover charge; however, tipping the musicians is highly encouraged. For more information on this and other events happening at the coffeebar/cafe, call 594-4123.
