East Coast blues maverick in Maine
Rockland — The weekly blues series continues with the Mikey Junior Band Monday, June 16, at 7 p.m., in the upstairs music room of Time Out Pub, 275 Main St. Tickets will be $10 at the door.
For blues fans in the Northeast United States, the future of the blues is assured every night Mikey Junior hits the stage. Self-taught from his impressive collection of blues vinyl, Mikey Junior was a full-time musician before he graduated high school. By the time he was in his early 20s, seasoned players were taking notice and one blues society after another was scrambling to get him to their stages.
Now a staple of the summer blues circuit on the East Coast, the Mikey Junior Band has joined the eclectic and youthful roster of the VizzTone Label Group. The band’s CD “Traveling South” reveals a young blues artist at the top of his game, offering well-written originals and choice covers brought to life with a distinctive vision for the genre.
Upcoming in the weekly series are: June 23, the Patti Parks Band ($10); June 30, the Peter Novelli Band ($10); and July 7, the Jason Elmore Band ($10). For more information, visit northatlanticbluesfestival.com and click on the Time Out Blues link.
The countdown to this year’s North Atlantic Blues Festival, July 12 and 13, has begun; advance tickets are available through July 7, available on the website and local ticket outlets Huston-Tuttle in Rockland and HAV II in Camden. Advance blues festival tickets are $25 for either day or $50 for the full weekend; tickets will be $35 per day at the gate.
