Earth 101: Understanding climate change
Rockland — If you think you’re worried about climate change, then Alder Stone Fuller is probably more worried than you. And you can hear him explain why at the Rockland Public Library Thursday, Feb. 6, at 6:30 p.m.
Fuller’s talk is entitled Earth 101: Understanding and Preparing for Abrupt Climate Change.
Fuller has been teaching science at the college level since the 1970s but in the 1990s he realized that he needed to make a change.
“I came to understand that the principles of the system sciences must provide a foundation for the emergence of ecologically-sustainable cultures in the face of 21st century challenges. However, introducing new ideas into an institution’s program requires years of work by curriculum committees. Yet these ideas are important now.”
Fuller’s concern is not for the future of the earth and mankind in the years to come but for what could happen right now in our lifetime, which he believes calls for action immediately and not just words and ideas.
“Abrupt climate change is probably unstoppable even with extreme emissions reductions, but we must reduce emissions as quickly and as much as possible to avoid more serious consequences.”
In his talk Fuller will address what he sees as the gravest challenge mankind has ever faced.
“We must immediately begin to increase community resilience by shock-proofing systems for basic needs — shelter, water, food, energy, health care, transportation and security — and promote the emergence of a new cultural guide us.”
Since 2001 Fuller has continued as an educator and consultant offering seminars, courses and tutoring not available anywhere else in the US in such an integrated way.
He lives in Belfast and this year founded a new community supported educational collective called “Ermah Ge” a component of which is an earth studies program for introductory and advanced study in systems sciences, biosciences and geosciences.
This presentation is hosted by the Rockland Public Library and offered as a free community event in in anticipation of the 27th Annual Camden Conference: The Global Politics of Food and Water, Feb. 21-23, at the Camden Opera House with live streaming to the Strand Theatre in Rockland and the Hutchinson Center in Belfast.
