Early morning blaze claims Waldoboro building
Waldoboro — A structure fire in the wee morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 16 resulted in the total loss of a building on Old Augusta Road in Waldoboro.
Waldoboro Assistant Fire Chief Bill Maxwell said the fire was called in at 1:43 a.m. Waldoboro Fire responded with a crew of 15 firefighters and three engines, he said. Warren Fire provided mutual aid.
When Waldoboro Deputy Fire Chief Dale Smith arrived on the scene, the building — a "sawmill-type structure," according to Maxwell — was "completely gone."
Firefighters remained at the scene until shortly before 6 a.m. Maxwell said the fire had spread slightly into nearby woods.
Waldoboro Fire Chief Paul Smeltzer said a Fire Marshal's investigation of the cause of the blaze remained open on Monday, Sept. 17. Smeltzer said he met with the Fire Marshal late Sunday, Sept. 16 and spent more than three hours at the scene.
