Douglas G. Day
VINALHAVEN — Douglas George Day, 60, died Sunday, July 29, 2012, surrounded by his family at home in Vinalhaven after a brief illness. Born in Vinalhaven on May 28, 1952, he was the son of Henley C. and Ethelyn (Webb) Day and was a 1970 graduate of Vinalhaven High School. He attended Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute and received an associates degree in oceanography and marine life. On Dec. 28, 1971, he married Joanne “Cheryl” Hildings. Doug served in the U.S. Navy from 1973 until 1978.
Doug had worked as a commercial fisherman in the lobster industry his entire life. For many years, he lobstered with his father fishing aboard The Ethelyn L. He also enjoyed working at the family store, Fishermen’s Friend, after he retired from lobstering.
Doug’s passion was his love of the ocean and his family. He lived most of his life fishing or cruising the on waters of Penobscot Bay with his family. He also had been a member of the Vinalhaven Fire Department.
Doug was predeceased by his father, Henley C. Day Jr., who died on July 6, 2012. Surviving is his mother, Ethelyn Webb Day; his wife, Joanne “Cheryl” Day; two children, Kenneth H. Day and his wife, Megan and Jessica Day and her partner Stacy Wadleigh; five grandchildren, Douglas Day, Chase Wadleigh, Jackson Day, Kyra Day and Henry Wadleigh; a brother, Walter Day and his wife, Lois; his mother-in-law, Madelyn Hildings; sister-in-law, Linda Hufsey and her husband, Roger; brother-in-law, John Hildings and his wife, Jill, all of Vinalhaven. He is also survived by his canine companion, Fred, the Basset Hound.
In keeping with his wishes, there are no services planned. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Bob Gagnon Cancer Fund, c/o Pen Bay Healthcare, 22 White St., Rockland, ME 04841; Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice, 170 Pleasant St., Rockland, ME 04843; or to the Island Community Medical Center, 15 Medical Center Loop, Vinalhaven, ME 04863. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
