Flagstaff, Ariz. — Donna Mattson, 80, died Nov. 13, 2012 at the Olivia White Hospice Home in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Mrs. Mattson was born on Dec. 3, 1931 in Rockland to Stanley J. and Albertha Hussey Stone and grew up on the coast of Maine. She lived in Rockland, Port Clyde and Waldoboro, where she raised her family on Finntown Road. In 1979, having grown tired of the harsh Maine winters, she and John moved to sunny Arizona. They lived in Flagstaff and for several years in Prescott, Ariz., returned to Maine for a few years, and moved back to Flagstaff for good in 2002.
Mrs. Mattson enjoyed many hobbies. She was an avid reader, a great cook, loved to knit and crochet, followed politics with a passion, was a talented writer especially when it came to political issues and loved to garden, creating beautiful landscapes in the yards of every home she lived in. She took up oil painting while living in Prescott, often painting floral scenes inspired by her beautiful flower gardens. In later years when her declining health limited her mobility, she discovered the computer and spent many hours debating politics in political chat rooms as well as keeping in touch with family back east.
With her family almost grown Mrs. Mattson went back to school to fulfill her dream of earning her GED and then pursued college courses at the University of Maine as well as at the community college in Flagstaff. She was proud to earn her Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate in 1979, shortly before moving to Arizona. She was a lifelong learner, always reading and studying.
She was a member of San Francisco de Asis Catholic Parish in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Mrs. Mattson was preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers and sisters, her husband, Cpl. John Mattson, U.S. Army, (retired), and her son Gilbert Tripp. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Judy Ryan of Waldoboro, her brother Stanley J. “Jimmy” Stone Jr. (Eileen) of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., her sons George Tripp III (Katy) of Tenants Harbor, Jeffrey Tripp of Bangor, Matthew Mattson of Rockland, John Eric Mattson (Linda) of Snowflake, Ariz. and her daughter Rebecca Williams of Flagstaff, Ariz.
