Do your smoke detectors make the grade?
Every home should be properly equipped with smoke alarms. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, "a properly installed and maintained smoke alarm is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
With this in mind, think about your own home for a minute. Are you following these steps?
- Homes should have alarms inside and outside every sleeping area and on every level of the house. This includes the basement. They should also be interconnected; when one goes off, all of them should go off.
- There are two types of smoke detectors: ionization and photoelectric. It is important to have both types in your home. Alternatively, you can get dual sensor alarms, which contain both ionization and photoelectric detectors.
- Alarms that are more than 10 years old should be replaced. If they don't work properly, replace them sooner.
