Waldoboro — Cub Scout Pack 216 held its annual Blue & Gold Banquet Feb. 28 to celebrate the birthday of Scouting. Scouts and their families enjoyed a potluck buffet dinner followed by some entertainment and awards ceremony.

Three Cub Scouts earned their first rank — Bobcat. First -graders Austin Whitney and Brandon Jones earned both their Bobcat and Tiger ranks, while second-grader James Rackliff earned Bobcat and will soon get his Wolf Rank. These boys participated in a face-painting advancement ceremony with their mothers.

Three Wolves earned fishing belt loops for participating in ice fishing events on Kaler’s Pond — Bruce Bossow, Gavin Fitzpatrick and Conor Jones. The boys performed a skit joined by James Rackliff, Boy Scout Nick Huber, and den leader Cody Drever.

Kevin Crossley, Rian Austin, and Mason Woodman (who was unable to attend) all earned their Bear badges. They also led the opening flag ceremony.

The eight boys who make up the Webelos den have been very busy working toward rank. Gabe Laweryson and Nathan Crossley are second year Webelos and have earned their Webelos Patches, Compass Emblem, and should complete requirements for their Arrow of Light awards by Crossover on April 11. The Arrow of Light is the highest rank a boy can earn in Cub Scouts, and is the one achievement that carries over to Boy Scouts.

First year Webelos Bobby McCafferty, Matthew Robbins, Elliot Rich and Thane Waddell also received their Webelos patches. Christian Moon, who joined the pack in late fall, is close to achieving rank. Brayden Frost joined only a month ago and will get his Bobcat soon. He received his Webelos colors, and was also given a patch to help him toward his first rank.

Now all the boys are gearing up for the annual Pinewood Derby. They will compete March 22. The winners of the local derby will move on the Kennebec Valley District Competition on April 5 in Winslow.

Pack 216 welcomes new boys from the Jefferson area at any time — for more information about having fun with a purpose through Scouting, please contact Cubmaster Valerie Drever at 549-7402. Drever can also put people in touch with leaders for Boy Scout Troop 216 for boys over 12 and Venture Crew 216 for teenage boys and girls.
