Create a Sailors' Valentine at the Penobscot Marine Museum
On Saturday, August 18th from 9 am to noon, join the Museum's education staff Betty Schopmeyer and Susan Henkel, to create a traditional Sailors' Valentine or a frame for a photo or mirror. We'll have all the supplies you need but if you would like to bring a favorite photo, keepsake, etc., please do so. Sailors' Valentines were traditionally made in Barbados as a cottage industry in the 19th century and sold to mariners on their way to New England. They were always octagonal, made with intricately patterned shells and sometimes photographs and contained in wooden glass-covered frames. The Museum has one in its collection. In the class, you will make a simpler version that is framed and ready to hang. We will also reflect on the 19th century love for nature-based crafts as we decorate other objects with shells. Cost is $40 for non-members and $36 for members and the class will be held at the Old Vestry, second floor. Please call ahead to register for the event at 548-2529 ext 206.
