Could this be year Mariners challenge for regional crown?
Thomaston — The following is a synopsis of the 2013 Oceanside High School boys soccer team:
Coach/years coached current team: Josh Mahar, 12th year (10 with Rockland).
Last year's record/playoff information: 6-7-1, No. 11 seed in Eastern Class B playoffs. The Mariners upset No. 6 Old Town 3-2 in a preliminary playoff before falling to No. 3 Winslow 2-0 in the quarterfinals.
Roster: Seniors John Ferguson and Nick Judge; juniors Travis Frye, Phil Atwood, Jimmy Strong, Kaleb Robinson, Eli Thorbjornson, Zach Peaco, Caleb Jacob, Stephen Goodridge, Justin Robinson, Zac Roman, Walker Ranney, Nate Philbrook, Nick Barrett, R.J. Hall and Brian Haskell; sophomores Andrew King, Christian Straka, Rory Polybank and Josh Luttrell; and freshman Coby Dorr.
Known graduation losses: Drew Townsend and Lars Feuerlein.
Significant impact players: Judge and Ferguson.
Team strengths: Strong core of upperclassmen.
Team goals: “Our goal is to make the [Eastern Class B] playoffs and win as many [regular-season] games as we can,” said Mahar.
Top league opponents: All the teams in Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B.
Outlook: The Mariners feature a strong nucleus of upperclassmen, led by the team's two seniors Judge and Ferguson. Mahar, who said their leadership “will be crucial to our success,” added that the KVAC is “very good this year, so I don't think we can look past anybody.”
Losing Townsend and Feuerlein is a blow, but the Mariners could find themselves sailing right into the thick of things in the postseason if all goes well this fall. The team also has a nucleus of talented juniors and sophomores.
