Competition weekend for Rockport Dance
North Berwick — Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15, nine Rockport Dance Conservatory students will travel to compete in this year’s Dancers Inc Regional Dance Competition at Noble High School. The 2014 Competition Team of Moira Pieri, Sydney Fields, Sadie Mills, Piper Pavelich, Annika Charland, Kelsey Guinn, Carrie Long, Paige Chester, Elise Mahar and Cecil Tinch will present solos, duo/trios and small group numbers.
There are many dance competitions throughout the United States, and these competitions have similar formats with specific rules and special offerings. Competing production numbers are entered into a category based on dancers’ age and experience range and are judged on technique, style, showmanship and precision. The numbers are critiqued in comparison to other numbers in the same age/level division.
The benefits of dance in general — strength, coordination, flexibility, discipline, commitment and teamwork — are magnified in a competition program. Rockport Dance Conservatory focuses on cultivating the balance of the benefits with some of the drawbacks, promoting dance numbers high in artistry and good technique rather than "tricks" and flash. Proper sportsmanship, group support, performance ability and creative exploration are reinforced. RDC does not require students to participate in competition.
