Community classes at the ‘wood school’
Rockport — The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship is offering Community Classes this fall. These weekend classes, scheduled to run in November and December, are designed to give Midcoast residents access to the school’s educational resources in a convenient time format. They run Saturdays and Sundays at the Center, 25 Mill St., just off Route 90.
Letter Carving with Valdemar Skov, Nov. 9 and 10, introduces tools and techniques for letter carving in wood. Learn to Turn with Stephen Gleasner, Nov. 16 and 17, teaches fundamental turning skills including lathe safety and tool selection. In Starting with Hand Tools with Kenneth Kortemeier, Nov. 23 and 24, students learn to use hand tools such as saws chisels and planes by building a small, pine bench. The fall series will conclude with Building a Rustic Slab-wood Bench with Stephen Gleasner, Dec. 8 and 9. This project-based class offers students the opportunity to combine hand tool skills with woodturning skills while creating simple, rustic furniture for the home or garden.
Local Maine woodworkers comprise the faculty for this season's offerings. Skov is a woodcarver, furniture maker and engraver specializing in ornamental carving of fine furniture. A woodworker since 1986, works out of his studio in Waldoboro. Gleasner is an Appleton artist/turner with extensive experience in faceplate and spindle work, gained over a 20-plus-year woodworking career. Kortemeier of Bristol joins the faculty after years of custom cabinetry and furniture making, as well as more than 10 years' experience teaching furniture making and wooden boat building in the Midcoast.
Tuition for Community Classes is $290 and the minimum age for participants is 16. Class size is limited to 12 students, so each participant gets plenty of individual attention.
