The Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County will celebrate Cinco de Mayo "el gato" style — with our annual "Cinco de Meow" adoption special beginning Monday, May 5, and running through Saturday, May 10. Adult cats, 1 year and older, will head home for the exceptionally reduced adoption fee of just $5. And, to really get this feline fiesta going, we'll waive the adoption fee entirely for anyone who wears a sombrero to adopt their new adult feline companion.

Our pet pick of the week Larry is a handsome 6-year-old domestic shorthair feline. You can often find this laid back fella lounging on the lobby counter "helping" staff with paperwork. He loves attention and to be the center of attention. If you're looking for a cat to cuddle with but who also has a frisky, playful side, come in and meet Larry.

Join us Tuesday, May 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. for the always fun Pints for Paws event at Trackside Station in Rockland featuring live music by Paddy Mills and a growing list of great raffle and silent auction prizes, with all proceeds going to the shelter. Plus, $1 from every pint of beer sold helps shelter animals. Thank you to Trackside Station and Loyal Biscuit for putting on this fun event to help out the shelter.

Save the date: Saturday, May 17 is our annual Clean Up and Cook Out. We need help sprucing up the place with a new coat of paint, weeding the garden, grooming the dog trails and the like. We'll start at 10 a.m. (garden tools welcome) work up an appetite and then around noon we will feed you a grilled lunch in appreciation of your hard work. Many hands make light work and it’s sure to be fun. Our annual meeting will be held at 1 p.m. following lunch.

Great news! Thanks to all who voted for us in the Bangor Savings Bank Community Matters More grant giveaway, we won $1,000 as a write-in. This money will go toward medical care for our animals. Thank you for your support. What a great community we live in.

Visit us at 17 Buttermilk Lane off Route 1 in Thomaston. We are open daily from 11a.m to 5p.m, closed on Sundays.

Wish list: Cat and dog toys, rabbit food, 6-inch paper plates, Windex, lint rollers, Swiffer cleaning pads.
