Cheering showcase set for Jan. 18 at MVHSThirteen squads, including reigning Class B, C, D champs, to compete
Waldoboro — With the high school cheering competition season right around the corner, several teams preparing to take the mats at conference, regional and state championships in the coming weeks will have one final tuneup on Friday, Jan. 18 at Medomak Valley High School.
That school will host the second annual Maine Cheerleading Coaches Association Showcase. The event will feature the Medomak Valley varsity cheering squad, along with a bundle of talented teams from Classes B, C and D.
The event will begin at 6 p.m.
Among the 13 competing teams will be Hermon, the defending state Class B champion; Central of East Corinth, the defending state Class C champion; and Central Aroostook, the defending state Class D champion.
Perennial Class B contender Ellsworth also will attend, along with Lincoln Academy of Newcastle, Bangor Christian, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln, Mount View of Thorndike, Deer Isle-Stonington, Morse of Bath, Winslow and Old Town.
There will no official winner of the event and team scores will be given to each individual coach only.
"It's an exhibition," said Medomak Valley coach Rachel Coor. "We've got a full panel of certified judges. It's just a chance for teams to get in front of the judges and the crowd one last time before [Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B] and regional championships."
The first $500 raised from the event will go back to the Maine Cheerleading Coaches Association, while additional funds will go to the Medomak Valley cheering program. Admission is $3 for students and $5 for adults.
Last year's showcase was held at Hermon High School.
Medomak Valley and Mount View, along with Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston, will participate in the KVAC Class B championships on Monday, Jan. 21. The Panthers then will participate in the Western Class B championships on Saturday, Jan. 26. Both upcoming competitions are at the Augusta Civic Center.
