Charles R. Overlock II
Rockland — Charles Ray Overlock II, 86, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 23, 2013, at the Knox Center in Rockland surrounded by his loving family.
He was born June 25, 1927 in Warren, the son of the late Charles and Doris Teague Overlock. Growing up in Warren he attended local schools until he joined the United States Army Air Corp where he served during World War II. Returning home from the service in November 1946 he received his discharge in December and married Thelma in January 1947. The two were married for 66 years.
Upon returning to the work force he was the foreman of the town crew for the town of Warren, a position he held until 1979. During this time he also was an integral part of the Warren Fire Department. He served as deputy chief for 26 years and was fire chief from 1972 to 1978. He enjoyed his time with the fire department and has been involved with the department in some way or another for more than 65 years. In 1979 Thelma and Charles went to Florida for a month long vacation; 30 years later they returned back to Maine. While in Florida, Charles worked for the Florida Institute of Technology where he was the head groundskeeper.
An accomplishment he was truly proud of was when he was awarded his GED at the age of 75. It was a long process with lots of paperwork but he managed to see it through and was rewarded at the end of his long journey. He enjoyed fishing, and being on the water. The children remember him building his own 16-foot boat and take them out for many rides in it. He also enjoyed building and selling Adirondack chairs. His family was his driving force for everything he did. He wanted to make sure that they were always well taken care of. Having the family around gave him great joy.
He will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by all that knew and loved him.
He was predeceased by a daughter Vera Marshall; his brothers Frank, Richard, Russell, and Ronald Overlock. Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years Thelma Overlock, of Warren; children Myron Overlock and his wife Susie of Warren, Linda Winstead and her husband Barrett of Rockland, Eric Overlock and his wife Patricia of Warren, Winona Rich and her husband Jim of Warren; siblings Jeanette Orff of Rockland, Bernice Matson of Gray, Albert Overlock of Warren and Carolyn Overlock, also of Warren; 13 grandchildren; and many many great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
