Vinalhaven — Charles Judson Curtis, 66, died Sunday, March 9, 2014, at his home.

Born in Ellsworth Jan. 12, 1948, he was the son of Arthur Hastings and Elinor (Hodgkins) Curtis. Following high school graduation, Charlie served in the U.S. Army as a radio operator in Vietnam from 1969 to 1972. After his military discharge, Charlie attended the University of Maine at Augusta for several years studying art and Russian.

In 1977, Charlie moved to Vinalhaven where he worked harvesting seaweed. He also worked as a sternman for 15 years for several local fishermen. In more recent years, Charlie worked as self-employed logger and woodsman clearing land and selling firewood. He enjoyed woodworking and wood carving in his spare time.

Surviving is his companion of 30 years, Sherry Rebecca Jameson of Vinalhaven; a brother, Joel Curtis of Ellsworth; two sisters, Carol Normandin of Mass.; and Marilyn Curtis of Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Elinor (Hodgkins) and a brother, David Curtis.

Charlie was one of a kind, kind hearted as anyone you could meet. He had a way about him that everyone seemed to be able to connect with him. I have never known a man like Charlie....I believe the world would be a much better place if there was more people like him. Becky you were one lucky lady to have him in your life. Then again you don't need me to tell you this. Heaven has one very special angel. Charlie you are going to be missed for sure. R.I.P. Charlie, a.k.a. Weeder.
