Cancer Care social worker appointed to cancer commission
Rockport — The Commission on Cancer Executive Committee and with the approval from the American College Surgeons Board of Regents announces that Virginia Vaitones has been appointed as chairman of the Member Organization Committee for a three-year term.
Vaitones was honored in 2003 for being the first social worker selected to serve on the Commission on Cancer, as well as now being appointed as chairman. The Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and monitoring of comprehensive quality care. Vaitones represents the Association of Oncology Social Work at the Commission on Cancer and has served on various committees during her tenure.
Vaitones is a certified oncology social worker in the Cancer Care Center at Pen Bay Medical Center. She has been working in the field of oncology, palliative care and hospice since 1974. Pen Bay's Cancer Care Program has been accredited by the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer since 1979.
