Camden Snow Bowl to be featured on Boston news program
Camden — The Camden Snow Bowl toboggan chute and Hope Elephants are among the local attractions to be featured on an upcoming episode of Chronicle, a news magazine program that airs nightly on Boston-based ABC affiliate WCVB channel 5.
Producer Maggy Harper was at Camden Snow Bowl on Jan. 21 preparing for a run down the toboggan chute. Ski instructor Andrew Dailey was on hand to show Harper around and inform her about the toboggan chute and other offerings at the outdoor recreation area.
A handful of teams that will compete in the U.S. National Toboggan Championships during the weekend of Feb. 8 through Feb. 10 were on hand to demonstrate for Harper and her camera man. The "Flying Beer Boys" a four-man team sponsored by Andrew's Brewing Company of Lincolnville were among the teams zipping down the chute for the benefit of Chronicle's cameras.
Harper said Chronicle does a segment called New England Main Streets. Filming that segment takes their crews to various hard-to-find and rural places throughout New England where they spend a day or two filming at local attractions. Harper said their team generally heads out with one big story in mind and leaves time to "discover" other stories of interest.
"When we pick a place we try to find a story in the area, in this case there are two," she said.
She explained that she and her cameraman will shoot at the Snow Bowl and at Hope Elephants, and that they'll also visit Frost Ice Bar at the Samoset and film a segment at the local foundry operated by artist Richard Remsen.
Harper said the segment on the Camden area will probably air in early February.
Past New England Main Street segments have been filmed in numerous locations including Barrington, Mass., and Stowe, Vt.
Harper — who visits Pemaquid Point each summer — said several years ago they shot a segment in Damariscotta during the spring.
"It was probably one of the prettiest [segments]," she said.
Harper said she'll look for a few other points of interest during her visit to Camden.
"[New England Main Streets] is one thing that our audience loves the most," she said.
