Camden-Rockport fifth-graders cleanup coast
Camden — On Friday, Sept. 21, fifth-graders from the Camden-Rockport Middle School spent the morning cleaning two beaches as part of Coastal Cleanup Week.
Fifth-grade teacher Kerry Keefe said the school's participation is part of a worldwide clean up event to help make a difference in the condition of the coast. Camden-Rockport Middle School participates in the event each year.
After the students collected the trash from Laite Beach in Camden and Chatfield Beach at Aldermere Farms, they then took it back to school where they weighed it and tallied the items they found.
Last year, Keefe said, students found so many plastic drinking straws during the worldwide cleanup, that McDonald's has begun making a switch to paper straws. During the 2011 collection, students found a car axle, she said.
This year students on Laite Beach collected several pieces of rusted metal, a rubber shoe sole, tennis ball, pottery, bottles and cans, glass, plastic wrappers and more.
