Camden — Starting Jan. 14, the Second Saturdays of the month in Camden will be special days in the downtown.

The Downtown Economic Vitality Team in conjunction with the Camden Area Business Group has launched Camden’s Second Saturday program to offer an opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy themed events, to shop local, and to make the most of the coastal community in all seasons.

The theme for Jan. 14 is “Shop, Ski, Dine” to encourage locals and those from away to support Camden’s downtown businesses and make the most of nearby recreational opportunities at the Camden Snow Bowl.

Future themes, while still in the planning stages, tentatively include:

Feb. 11 – US National Toboggan Championships

March 11 – Restaurant specialties

April 8 – Easter theme & activities

May 13 – Business Is Blooming – welcoming new businesses to Camden

June 10 – Music in the downtown

July 8 – Celebrating our harbor

Aug. 12 – Health and wellness

Sept. 9 – Makers’ Fair

Oct. 14 – Foliage, Chairlift rides, fall theme Nov. 11 (Veteran’s Day) – Veterans honored and service of all kinds highlighted

Dec. 9 – Inns and B&Bs Holiday Open House

The program was introduced on the first weekend of December during Christmas By the Sea event. At that time, the businesses who are “founding members” of the program participated in an invitation to visitors to win a trip back to Camden on a Second Saturday in 2017. Participants went to shops with a card to verify they’d visited, in order to enter the drawing. A couple from Texas won the trip back to Camden on a subsequent Second Saturday. The statewide promotion was funded by a grant from the Maine Retail Association through the Maine Office of Tourism.

Founding members of the Second Saturday program are: Ducktrap Bay Trading Company, Fireside Pizza, Leonard’s, Maine Sport Outfitters, Manny’s & Karyl’s, The Maine Dog, The Owl & Turtle Bookshop, Reny’s, Surroundings, Uncle Willy’s Candy Shoppe and the Hawthorn Inn.

The Maine Retail Association runs the statewide Shop Second Saturday program to encourage the shop local movement in Maine. The program is free for any business. To see the location of Camden’s participating businesses, visit shopsecondsaturday.com/map/#.
