Camden Hills top Class B squad in talent-laden KVAC meetWindjammer Powers wins 145-pound title; other Midcoast grapplers excel
Augusta — Camden Hills, Medomak Valley and Oceanside student-athletes toiled on the mat Saturday, Jan. 26 in the annual talent-laden Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference high school wrestling championships and, while none of the Midcoast squads could outpoint eventual overall champion Skowhegan, Windjammers, Panthers and Mariners did turn in strong individual performances.
Camden Hills, a perennial overall league championship contender, finished second to Class A Skowhegan, but the Windjammers were the top Class B squad in the competition at Cony High School.
The league has awarded separate Class A and Class B championships the last three or four years to bring wrestling in line with other league sports. Thus, the Windjammers, often the overall league champion, won the Class B portion of this year's event.
The lone Midcoast individual champion during the day's competition was Camden Hills' Coleman Powers, who placed first at 145 pounds.
Additionally, Camden Hills' John Underhill (2nd at 120 pounds), James Archer (3rd at 113), Chris Weiss (3rd at 126), Connor Winchenbach (3rd at 138) and Calan Bragg (4th at 132) had standout days.
Medomak Valley's Cyril Miller placed third at 182 pounds as the only other local athlete to finish among the top four.
The team scores were: Skowhegan 227.5, Camden Hills 142.5, Belfast 104, Mount Blue of Farmington 96, Gardiner 81, Mount Ararat of Topsham 79, Morse of Bath 77, Oxford Hills of South Paris 75, Cony of Augusta 70, Nokomis of Newport 69, Winslow 56, Erskine Academy of South China 55, Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 49.5, Mount View of Thorndike 46, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 34, Brewer 32, Medomak Valley of Waldoboro 32, Brunswick 28, Edward Little of Auburn 12, Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston 10 and Hampden Academy 3.
Camden Hills, Medomak Valley and Oceanside will compete in the Eastern Class B championships on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 9:30 a.m. at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield.
The Windjammers are the odd-on favorite to win the regional title and also challenge for the state crown the following weekend. Camden Hills was the defending league champion and is the defending regional and state titlist.
Camden Hills/Camden-Rockport has a pedigree for pinning down championships, having captured 13 state Class B titles, 17 Eastern Class B crowns and 11 KVAC championships in its 40-year history. The Windjammers also have been state runners-up seven times, regional runners-up three times and league runners-up four times, including last weekend.
