Camden Hills outduels Ellsworth for Eastern Class B title

Belfast — In a close battle to the end, Camden Hills outdistanced Ellsworth, an opponent who had beaten the Windjammers twice in dual-meets during the regular season, in the Eastern Class B wrestling championships on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Belfast Area High School.

The individual Midcoast regional champions included Camden Hills' Hilary Merrifield (106 pounds), Zac Annis (113) and Connor Winchenbach (152), as well as Medomak Valley's Cyril Miller (170).

The team scores were: Camden Hills 203, Ellsworth 194.5, Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft 159, Belfast 82, Caribou 65, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 64, Hermon 50, Medomak Valley of Waldoboro 43, Mount Desert Island 22 and Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston 10.

Camden Hills, in its 41st year of existence, has won 14 state Class B titles (and been state runners-up seven times), 12 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championships and now 19 Eastern Class B crowns.

The following Midcoast athletes qualified for the state from Saturday's regional meet:

Belfast — Austin Merando (2nd at 106), Brendan Bruns (2nd at 113), Walker Roberts (2nd at 138), Michael McFadden (3rd at 145), John Capella (4th at 160) and Matthew Smith (4th at 182)

Camden Hills — Merrifield (1st at 106), Annis (1st at 113), Winchenbach (1st at 152), James Acher (2nd at 120), John Underhill (2nd at 132), Eli Smith (2nd at 145), Elvis Bowen (2nd at 160), Brian Jones (2nd at 182), Jared Gilbert (2nd at 195), Zac Collins (4th at 126), Taylor Crosby (4th at 138) and Kaylo Littlejohn (4th at 285).

Medomak Valley — Miller (1st at 170) and Riley McCollett (3rd at 138)

Oceanside — Dallas Ball (3rd at 132).

The top four wrestlers in each weight class, from both the Eastern and Western regional meets (Western B was held at Winslow), advance to the state Class B championship meet on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 9:30 a.m. at Morse High School in Bath.

The individual Eastern Class B results for Midcoast student-athletes included:

106 pounds — Hilary Merrifield, CH, pinned Rayanne Leach, Med, at 5:19; pinned Landan Scott, Ells, at 3:34; and won by major decision over Austin Merando, Bel, 10-1 in the championship final. Merrifield finished first.

Austin Merando, Bel, pinned Michelle Smith, FA, at 0:34; pinned Marcus Parsons, MDI, at 5:02; and lost by major decision to Hilary Merrifield, CH, 10-1 in the championship final. Merando finished second.

Rayanne Leach, Med, was pinned by Hilary Merrifield, CH, at 5:19; received a bye; and was pinned by Marcus Parsons, MDI, at 5:34.

113 pounds — Zac Annis, CH, won by major decision over Noah Robidoux, Ells, 9-0; pinned Chris Watrous, MCI, at 1:06; and beat Brendan Bruns, Bel, 5-4, in the championship final. Annis finished first.

Brendan Bruns, Bel, received a bye; won by major decision over Rebecca King, Car, 11-3; and lost to Zac Annis, CH, 5-4 in the championship final. Bruns finished second.

120 pounds — James Archer, CH, pinned Dominic Frongillo, MDI, at 0:21; pinned Kyle Morris, Car, at 0:40; and lost to Antonio Ayala, FA, 14-12, in the championship final. Archer finished second.

Cole Ashmore, Med, was pinned by Kyle Morris, Car, at 5:25; and was pinned by Dominic Frongillo, MDI, at 2:30.

Zachary Sheafe, Bel, was pinned by Joshua Wright, Ells, at 1:57; received a bye; and was pinned by Kyle Morris, Car, at 3:43.

126 pounds — Zac Collins, CH, pinned Brandon Waterman, Bel, at 5;14; was pinned by Dylan Dahlbergh, MCI, at 3:42; pinned Deagen Poland, Med, at 0:37; and was pinned by Eli Olson, FA, at 3:55 in the consolation final. Collins finished fourth.

Brandon Waterman, Bel, was pinned by Zac Collins, CH, at 5:14; received a bye; and was pinned by Eli Olson, FA, at 2:46.

Deagen Poland, Med, was pinned by Eli Olson, FA, at 5:11; pinned Matt Farnham, Her, at 3:04; and was pinned by Zac Collins, CH, at 0:37.

132 pounds — John Underhill, CH, pinned Andrew Cronk, Med, at 1:32; beat Dallas Ball, Ocean, 7-3; and lost by technical fall over Dagan Berenyi, Ells, 19-3 in the championship final. Underhill finished second.

Dallas Ball, Ocean, received a bye; lost to John Underhill, CH, 7-3; pinned Isaac Whittemore, FA, at 2:15; and beat Tanner Littlefield, MCI, 2-0 in the consolation final. Ball finished third.

Matthew Oxton, Bel, was pinned by Dagan Berenyi, Ells, at 1:02; and was pinned by Isaac Whittemore, FA, at 0:44.

Andrew Cronk, Med, was pinned by John Underhill, H, at 1:32; received a bye; and was pinned by Tanner Littlefield, MCI, at 4:27.

138 pounds — Walker Roberts, Bel, pinned Eric Simon, Car, at 0:26; won by default over Trent Goodman, Ells, at 1:26; and lost by major decision to Brooks Law, FA, 11-3, in the championship final. Roberts finished second.

Riley McCollett, Med, pinned Taylor Crosby, CH, at 1:46; was pinned by Brooks Law, FA, at 1:56; pinned Eric Simon, Car, at 3:42; and beat Taylor Crosby, CH, 10-7, in the consolation final. McCollett finished third.

Jack Holt, Ocean, was pinned by Trent Goodman, Ells, at 1:26; and was pinned by Eric Simon, Car, at 3:37.

Taylor Crosby, CH, was pinned by Riley McCollett, Med, at 1:46; received a bye; won by default over Trent Goodman, Ells; and lost to Riley McCollett, Med, 10-7, in the consolation final. Crosby finished fourth.

145 pounds — Eli Smith, CH, received a bye; pinned Axios Gerakaris, Car, at 2:33; and lost to Jack Weeks, Ells, 12-9, in the championship final. Smith finished second.

Mike McFadden, Bel, pinned Jarod Black, FA, at 3:43; lost to Jack Weeks, Ells, 14-11; beat Elijah Molloy, MDI, 5-2; and won by major decision by Axios Gerakaris, Car, 10-2, in the consolation final. McFadden finished third.

Tim Jerome, Med, was pinned by Jack Weeks, Ells, at 5:17; won by major decision over Jarod Black, FA, 16-6; and was pinned by Axios Gerakaris, Car, at 1:04.

152 pounds — Connor Winchenbach, CH, pinned Jesse Bishop, Bel, at 0:15; won by major decision over Billy Brock, FA, 13-2; and won by default over Connor Petros, Ells, in the championship final. Winchenbach finished first.

Quinn Ashmore, Med, was pinned by Connor Petros, Ells, at 2:06; pinned Nolan Powers, Car, at 2:14; and lost to Billy Brock, FA, 6-0.

Jesse Bishop, Bel, was pinned by Connor Winchenbach, CH, at 0:15; and was pinned by Wilder Young, MDI, at 2:02.

160 pounds — Elvis Bowen, CH, won by technical fall over Nick Keene, Ocean, 17-2; won by technical fall over John Capella, Bel, 21-3; and was pinned by Todd Francis, FA, at 4:37 in the championship final. Bowen finished second.

John Capella, Bel, received a bye; lost by technical fall to Elvis Bowen, CH, 21-3; pinned Samantha Fowles, Med, at 1:18; and was pinned by Austin Smith, Ells, at 2:59 in the consolation final. Capella finished fourth.

Samantha Fowles, Med, was pinned by Todd Francis, FA, at 0:39; received a bye; and was pinned by John Capella, Bel, at 1:18.

Nick Keene, Ocean lost by technical fall to Elvis Bowen, CH, 17-2; received a bye; and was pinned by Austin Smith, Ells, at 0:52.

170 pounds — Cyril Miller, Med, pinned Travis Tran, Bel, at 1:10; won by major decision over Michael Pendriss, FA, 13-5; and beat Joe Wright, Ells, 8-1, in the championship final. Miller finished first.

Wyatt Parra, CH, was pinned by Jacob Bither, Car, at 2:52; received a bye; and lost to Michael Pendriss, FA, 3-0.

182 pounds — Brian Jones, CH, pinned Dustin Demerchant, Car, at 0:20; pinned Matthew Smith, Bel, at 4:37; and lost by major decision to Brandon Brock, FA, 13-3, in the championship final. Jones finished second.

Jared Vaughn, Bel, was pinned by Michael Garland, Ells, at 1:36; and was pinned by Colton Conley, Car, at 2:31.

Regan Billingsley, Ocean, lost to Seth Wilcox, MCI, 9-6; and lost to Craig Chambers, FA, 3-1.

285 pounds — Kaylo Littlejohn, CH, lost to Briar Bussell, MCI, 5-1; pinned Adam Ranco, MDI, at 1:54; pinned Jared Hansen, Bel, at 2:18; and lost to Brair Bussell, MCI, 2-1, in the consolation final. Littlejohn finished fourth.

Alex Rackliffe, Ocean, was pinned by Jared Bragg, Ells, at 1:45; and was pinned by Devin Madigan, FA, at 2:40.

Jared Hansen, Bel, pinned Evin Madigan, FA, at 1:18; was pinned by Jared Bragg, Ells, at 2:30; and was pinned by Kalo Littlejohn, CH, at 2:18.
