Camden Hills looks to play best by end of campaign
Rockport — The following is a synopsis of the 2014 Camden Hills Regional High School baseball team:
Coach/years coached current team: Jeff Hart, sixth year.
Last year's record/playoff information: 12-4, fifth in Eastern Class B. The Windjammers defeated No. 12 Gardiner 8-7 in a preliminary playoff and fell to No. 4 Waterville 10-4 in the quarterfinals.
Roster: Seniors Aubrey Pennington (infield, catcher), Joe Chamberlain (outfield), Henry Laurita (outfield) Chandler Crans (pitcher, infield), Merrill Hall (pitcher, infield), Connor Graffam (infield, pitcher), Peter Vannorsdall (outfield), John Hall (infield, pitcher), Sam Gimlewicz (catcher) and Sam Berry (infield, pitcher); juniors Ben Rollins (infield, pitcher), Daulton Wickenden (infield, pitcher) and Andrew Hall (infield, pitcher); and sophomores Michael Wolff (infield, outfield) and Kyle Crans (catcher).
Known graduation losses: Eliot Grindle, Coleman Powers, Alex Crans, Ian Nason and Connor Hart.
Significant impact players: Pennington, Chamberlain, Laurita, Chandler Crans, Merrill Hall, Graffam, Vannorsdall, John Hall, Gimlewicz and Berry.
Team strengths: Pitching and experience.
Team goals: “To improve every day and to be playing our best baseball by the end of the season,” said coach Hart.
Top league opponents: Winslow and Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston.
Outlook: The Windjammers are a senior-laden bunch this season and have a great deal of not only varsity experience, but playoff experience. Coach Hart said his team will depend heavily on its seniors this season.
"If we are going to make our mark, then they have to perform [and] they have to lead,” said the veteran coach.
If everyone can stay healthy and players reach their potential, the coach said, Camden Hills could be among the top teams in Eastern Class B by season's end.
