Camden Hills first, Belfast second in KVAC Class B

Topsham — The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference wrestling mats proved a fertile place for high-level success for several Midcoast teams, many local individuals and an area coach on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Mount Ararat High School.

While Skowhegan, a Class A team, finished first overall in the league championships, Camden Hills placed first in Class B and Windjammer Jared Gilbert returned home as league champion at 195 pounds.

Additionally, veteran Mount View coach Hamilton Richards was recognized as KVAC Class B coach of the year.

The team scores were: Skowhegan 197 (best overall, best in Class A), Camden Hills of Rockport 131.5 (best in Class B), Cony of Augusta 120, Belfast 84.5, Oxford Hills of South Paris 84, Mount Ararat 78, Winslow 71, Nokomis of Newport 64, Mount View of Thorndike 60, Erskine Academy of South China 57, Mount Blue of Farmington 53.5, Medomak Valley of Waldoboro 46.5, Edward Little of Auburn 39.5, Gardiner 39, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 34, Morse of Bath 30, Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston 26, Hampden Academy 18, Brunswick 18 and Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 7.

Camden Hills, Belfast, Mount View, Medomak Valley and Oceanside will return to the postseason mats for the regional championships on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 9:30 a.m., with the Windjammers, Lions, Panthers and Mariners in the Eastern Class B meet at Belfast Area High School

Ellsworth, Camden Hills and Belfast should battle for Eastern Class B supremacy.

The Mustangs will toil in Western Class B at Winslow the same day.

At the KVACs on Saturday, top-four performances were turned in by the following Midcoast wrestlers:

Belfast — Mike McFadden (2nd at 145), Brendan Bruns (3rd at 113), Austin Merando (4th at 106) and Walker Roberts (4th at 138).

Camden Hills — Gilbert (1st at 195), James Archer (2nd at 120), Hilary Merrifield (third at 106), Elvis Bowen (3rd at 160), Connor Winchenbach (4th at 152), Brian Jones (4th at 182) and Kaylo Littlejohn (4th at 285)

Medomak Valley — Cyril Miller (3rd at 182) and Cole Ashmore (4th at 120).

Mount View — Chris Cole (2nd at 285), James Blachette (4th at 126), Anthony Barnard (4th at 145) and Job Mesaric (4th at 220).

Oceanside — Dallas Ball (3rd at 132).

The individual bracket information for all Midcoast mat athletes included:

106 pounds — Hilary Merrifield, CH, pinned Michael Voter, MtB, at 2:40; was pinned by Cody Craig, Skow, at 2:37; pinned Zach Charest, Con, at 1:27 and pinned Austin Merando, Bel, 5-4 in the consolation final. Merrifield finished third.

Austin Merando, Bel, pinned Zach Charest, Con, at 5:32; was pinned by Christian Jensen, Brun, at 1:32; pinned Michael Voter, MtB, at 2:37; and lost to Hilary Merrifield, CH, 5-4 in the consolation final. Merando finished fourth.

Rayanne Leach, Med, was pinned by Cody Craig, Skow, at 1:18; and was pinned by Michael Voter, MtB, at 2:47.

113 pounds — Brendan Bruns, Bel, received a bye; was pinned by Peter Delgalo, Gard, at 2:17; pinned Josh Gilbert, Con, at 2:44; and beat Taylor Alleano, OxH, 11-5 in the consolation final. Bruns finished third.

120 pounds — James Archer, CH, received a bye; pinned Zach Sheafe, Bel, at 0:58; pinned Isaac Taylor, EA, at 1:33; and was pinned by Tyler Craig, Skow, at 1:29 in the championship final. Archer finished second.

Cole Ashmore, Med, received a bye; was pinned by Cordell Brooks, OxH, at 3:25; received another bye; pinned George Berry, MtA, at 3:21; won by major decision over Isaac Taylor, EA, 14-2; and lost to Cordell Brooks, OxH, 5-0 in the consolation final. Ashmore finished fourth.

Zach Sheafe, Bel, received a bye; was pinned by James Archer, CH, at 0:58; beat Chandler Weiczorek, Gard, 7-0; and was pinned by Tre Caudill, Con, at 3:10.

125 pounds — James Blanchette, MtV, received a bye; pinned Brandon Waterman, Bel, at 3:22; won by major decision over Jon Hankey, OxH, 13-4; beat Eli Chubbuck, Skow, 7-5; and lost by forfeit to Dillon Pelletier, Win, in the consolation final. Blanchette finished fourth.
